Desires, Dreams

On December 24 I woke up typing into my cell phone some wishes and short predictions of what 2011 could bring those of us who live on this Island. After sending some 140 character texts via Twitter, it occurred to me to ask my friends and acquaintances to send me their own hopes and I promised to catapult them into cyberspace. Within a few hours my Motorola inbox collapsed under the weight of so many forecasts and expectations for the coming months. Curiously, one word was repeated in the majority of those messages, the eight letters of the elusive libertad filled a good part of the text messages that came to me on Christmas Eve.

So I would like, in these final days of 2010, to post my own concept of freedom on Generation Y. In these images, filmed by a couple of young German filmmakers, I sum up my relationship with this concept absent from our lives, but not from our aspirations.

* The video is a fragment of the film “I’m Free,” by Andrea Roggan of Germany, which is still being edited.

Yoani’s comments from the video:

For me, freedom, although I don’t fully know it, signifies a goal, an objective to go toward, and I fundamentally believe that freedom is the possibility of standing on a street corner and shouting “There is no freedom here!” I believe it is a space where you can get more and more freedom.

Well, freedom begins within you. The day you wake up and say I will not to pretend anymore, I will not wear the mask anymore, I will not allow them to continue stealing pieces of my opinion, pieces of my freedom of movement… well, in my case it started when I began this adventure that is Generation Y, my blog on the internet, which is a long process of internal liberation. It is like a therapy, above all to shake off years and years of apathy, years and years of silence.

  2. It is evident that a choice however small in it appearance can become the seed of freedom within anyone of us.
Freedom (from my experience) comes from within our selves, from the place no one can touch or read or hear.
It comes from thougth, from suffering, from the gut.
I learned long ago that freedom comes from instinct, from the root of human nature.
No amount of brain washing or twisting of facts will ever be able to deny her existence.
No effort however powerful in its repression: not w/the barrel of a gun, not w/the impunity of torture nor w/the attempt to control one’s life can mantain a cruel regime like Cuba’s or any other.
Sooner or later they will fall at its core if it continues w/its attempt to stop freedom.
Thru history freedom has always survived such attacks, freedom has as never been conquered & it never will be …
No twisting of facts, nor lying by omission will ever prevail, w/freedom comes truth.
    Again:
Freedom is human nature, is truth …

  3. A bit of statistics here:

only yesterday, 09.01.2011. the team “yoani” sent 16 SMS that have been published on this site, on your right top side.

Interestingly, in their true hypocritic form, they complain in three of the messages about “censorship” over the mobile phones.

A question begs an answer: how come “yoani” managed to send 16, and possibly more, SMS from her monitored and censored phone?

How come not one message was intercepted and blocked?

Here’s the only possible explanation: “yoani” is in cahoots with the Castros. After all, according to one of those SMS yesterday, just about ALL of her dissident “friends” have their mobiles blocked.

Curious to learn that she, the most exposed anti-government critic, still sends her mobile messages, and talks over the phone, whenever and whoever she wants.

Apparently, “yoani” is a relative of Castros. Or, at least, a very close family friend. Bathed with money, innumerous mobile phones, freedom to do and say whatever she wants.

Only closest relatives and confidants of Castros can do that.

Which one are you, team “yoani”…?

  4. Speaking about the prisons, how about the fact that usa is a prison state that dwarfs Cuba thousands of times over? Just in California over 170 000 people, majority being there for minor offences, are serving time to the capitalist, conservative governator immigrant Arnie Schwartz, somtin’.

That is what he meant when he declared California is “open for biznes”. He rushed the laws and “reforms” of penitentiary system which privatised what little was left in state’s hands, and then, just as Pensylvania, Texas, Florida and some other states, introduced draconian laws like “three strikes and out” to fill prisons with supposedly “free” people.

Most offences are minor and in a civilised world are not illegal behaviour. One such example is having an empty bottle of beer in your car. If it is visible, you get a night in the prison.

That’s right, you go to jail. No ticket. Jail.

Do that two more times and you get up to 6 months in the crapper.

Is it good for “biznes”? You bet your sorry cuban immigran’t arse it is.

The state collects the taxes from the people and then pays private companies, in charge of those prison, 50 000 dollar per year to keep the fockers in the jail.

Mates’ rates. The more people are in the prison, the more money Arnold’s mates (the owners of those private prisons) make.

That is what the team “yoani” are really complaining about in Cuba. Prisons are “inefficient” and a waste of money. No one is making a profit out of them.

    How outrageous!!!!!

Enter teh dictator apprentices “yoani” and the team, and let me show you how to keep the fockers in check AND make money on frightened people!!!!

Move over Castros. You are a failure. Let “yoani” show you how to keep the prisons rentable with her “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.

  5. And it is still a pleasure to read some older posts from the team “yoani” and read how “she” is looking at that mobile held by a spanish lady, with a desire and long to have one…

Only to a few posts later talk about her own latest model of the same cpmpany, and in the above post talks about “her” mobile, the latest model of course, of a DIFFERENT model.

Seems for all the bullshit the team “yoani” serves daily, they do not actually have the problem they are so passionately complaining about!!!!!

Hypocrisy of another generation of future dictators in the making.

  7. freedom is a goal & perhaps much more.
But: w/freedom comes responsibility & accountability:
Responsibility for our actions, accountability for the consecuences of our actions.
W/freedom comes understanding of our limitations yet the agreements to respect one another.
Freedom is much more … is the ability to choose freely, the expression of ideas, the artful creations & expressions of our mind & heart, it is after all the representation of humanity at is best …

  8. By the way, if anyone is capable of an intelligent discourse, as they all flatter to themselves, but their posts scream to the opposite, do tell what is so good about those “classifieds” the team “yoani” provides on this site?

One after another is a criminal activity, even in the bad old usa.

How is that a work of a “some kind of pragmatic capitalist”?

I can see the answer in that phrase, but can anyone else see it too?

Is THAT that “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”? Promotion of criminal activities?

And they wonder when I call them criminals…

Stupidity is appreciated in conservative circles because it is confused with an intelligence.

An oxymoron: it is a rethorical answer.

  9. Some chatter here, pulling the data from the last century to prove some lame ideology from he same period.

The future does not lay in yesterday. The future lays in tomorrow. No matter how much would some want it, there is no return to the past.

Those incapacitated to understand that are incapacitated for a rational discussion, as proved so far with innumerous insults and rudeness so typical for cubans in emigration, usually cleaning floors

Anyone who just felt insulted, please note that I do not know who you are and I am not mentioning any names.

Ok, here are some names: Luis Posada Carilles, Orlando Bosch. The murderers of CUBANS.

Anyone who calls Castros murderers of Cubans, MUST also distance him/her-self from that scum of a human, and his collaborators.

If one considers hi/her-self a “democrat”, one MUST be consistent in application of “democratic” stickyard to all perpetrators.

ANd these numbers from 1957 are crap. Today’s numbers are MUCH better than those.

Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate, an infant death rate lower than some developed countries, and an average age expectancy of 77.64. In 2006, Cuba was the ONLY nation in the world which MET the WWF’s definition of sustainable development; having a ecological footprint of less than 1.8 hectares per capita and a Human Development Index over 0.8.

Not the usa, not Sweden, not Norway.

    CUBA.

So those numbers from 1957, are WAY worse than those of today.

So many things come forward from that single fact, we should have a forum for just those issues.

Do the team “yoani” recognise these achievements?

    No.

See, they are NOT in their interest. These facts depict Cuba as doing something well. Actually, better than any of the “pragmatic democratic capitalists”.

Those criminals cannot have the truth as an obstacle in their “struggle” for the “freedom” the way they perceive it.

And their freedom ws perfectly described by that other deceptive religious liar, called “mother” Teresa.

That liar and manipulator is on the record saying to Nancy Reagan “Darling “god” wanted you to be rich, do not worry about it. Enjoy. You have every right to do so.”

Enjoy it. Teresa did not say “if it is a burden, share it with poor.” No, she said “enjoy it and do not worry. “god” wanted you to be rich…”

By the way, did you know that Ronald Reagan was a memeber of Democratic party for thirty years, before he joined Republicans?

Democrats classified him as a stupid and incompetent, prone to gaffs and statements that are antagonising and dangerous for him and for the party.

When he, finally- being stupid as he was, realised he had no future in politics as a democrat, he simply moved on and joined republicans…

Stupidity is appreciated among the conservatives.

  10. Damir,

“Fidel’s absolute lack of “ear” for economy.” is CUBA’S REALITY!

    CUBA FACTS:

Socio-Economic Conditions in Pre-Castro Cuba* Introduction
In the 1950’s Cuba was, socially and economically, a relatively advanced country, certainly by Latin American standards and, in some areas, by world standards.
Cuba’s infant mortality rate was the best in Latin America — and the 13th lowest in the world.
Cuba also had an excellent educational system and impressive literacy rates in the 1950’s.
Pre-Castro Cuba ranked third in Latin America in per capita food consumption.
Cuba ranked first in Latin America and fifth in the world in television sets per capita.
Pre-Castro Cuba had 58 daily newspapers of differing political hues and ranked eighth in the world in number of radio stations.

    Health
Cuba’s infant mortality rate of 32 per 1,000 live births in 1957 was the lowest in Latin America and the 13th lowest in the world, according to UN data. Cuba ranked ahead of France, Belgium, West Germany, Japan, Austria, Italy, and Spain.
In 1955, life expectancy in Cuba was among the highest at 63 years of age; compared to 52 in other Latin American countries, 43 in Asia, and 37 in Africa.
In terms of physicians and dentists per capita, Cuba in 1957 ranked third in Latin America, behind only Uruguay and Argentina — both of which were more advanced than the United States in this measure. Cuba’s 128 physicians and dentists per 100,000 people in 1957 was the same as the Netherlands, and ahead of the United Kingdom (122 per 100,000 people) and Finland.

  11. Post 19, because his country is in ruins when it didn;t have to be. He is a smart person on certain levels.

But to insist on sugarcane as a “symbol” of progress, and we knowhow did that work for Cuba, and to ignore the rest of the industry until the sanctions grinded it (the rest of industry) down to the bone, you would have to admit that for a smart person, it was a very stupid thing to do.

A strupid as those few anti-Castro cretens here are, I do agree on one thing with them.

The sanctions are not the only reason for current economic situation in Cuba.

The other reason is Fidel’s absolute lack of “ear” for economy.

Just as the team “yoani’s” lack of the same “ear” for reality is.

Only a would go and change the system radically when that is only going to bring more hardship and misery to the people.

Changes like that must be in small steps and efficient.

Raul is doing the small steps, but his steps are just as bullshit as the team “yoani’s” comments.

    Pointless, aimless and inefficient.

I am not convinced by the team “yoani’s” perceived “humanist” approach. Their tone is all dark and negative.

Yet, when you actually go to Cuba and see how people live under the difficulties, and see those big smiles, you realise the last thing they need is another “smart” to tell them what is good for them.

From the team “yoani” to the last supporting her, there are plenty of “I know better” slimeballs making their living in slums of Miami seling drugs, arms and killing each other whenever their bosses, yankees or mexican druglords, order them to do so, the “IQ” seems to be in endless supply.

But one look at their achievements and all you can see is Castros in jackal’s skin…

  12. Elio Esquivel

  13. @#12
    “when one lies…”
Follow your own advise fella, read your past postings on the subject of lying, misrepresenting the truth, twisting facts & being a bully.
You give yourself credit thinking this is the place to “prove you wrong”
From the contents of your statements & the manner in which you make them you prove beyond any doublt who you are, a spoiled a racist & a bully w/ a wrong an inflated sense of self.
Go back home w/your parents & as a new year’s resolution think about living on your own & working an honest day’s work for an honest day’s wage.

  14. GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX FOUND FREEDOM! EVEN IF IT IS JUST AN ECONOMIC ONE! BUT JUDGING FROM THE RACISM IS CUBA, IT COULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO THIS TOO!

ESPN: CUBAN BOXER Guillermo Rigondeaux sets fight
In just his seventh professional fight, two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux won an interim world title. In his eighth fight, he’ll make his first defense.

Rigondeaux (7-0, 5 KOs) will defend his version of the 122-pound title against Willie Casey on March 19 in Dublin.

Rigondeaux, 30, who is regarded as one of the greatest amateur fighters ever, outpointed Ricardo Cordoba on Nov. 13 on the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito pay-per-view undercard at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to claim a vacant belt.

Rigondeaux was an Olympic champion in 2000 and 2004 before escaping Cuba on his second attempt to defect in 2009.
“Casey doesn’t belong in the same ring as me,” Rigondeaux said in making the fight announcement. “But I admire his courage for wanting to fight me. I’m excited about fighting in Ireland again, where I won my first world championship as an amateur in 2001. … Casey and all of the fans in attendance will see a true world champion in action March 19. If Casey thinks I’m going to Ireland to lose my world title belt, he’s making a big mistake because I’m going to win, and in sensational fashion. He is tailor-made for me.

“I watched a couple of rounds of Casey’s previous fights and concluded that he’s a bit of a one-trick pony. We are as far apart in class as in residence, make no mistake about that and when the bell rings March 19, that will certainly be evident to all.”

Fighting in his hometown of Limerick, Ireland, the 29-year-old Casey (11-0, 7 KOs) knocked out Paul Hyland in the fourth-round on Nov. 6 to win the vacant European title, which he will relinquish when he faces Rigondeaux for a world title belt.

“Willie is a warrior and a manager’s dream but unfortunately for Team Casey, Rigondeaux is unlike any boxer Casey has ever faced,” said Gary Hyde, Rigondeaux’s manager. “‘Rigo’ is a freak of nature. His amateur pedigree is unmatched in boxing history and he has already stamped his unique talent on the professional scene by winning the WBA world interim title in just his seventh pro fight.”

Rigondeaux opens training camp with trainer Ronnie Shields in Houston on Monday.

“Casey is very tough and he appears to have a big heart,” Shields said. “Once Rigondeaux catches Casey, though, Rigo’s power will shake him down to his boots. Rigo hits hard for his weight and Casey will be punching the air most of the night because Rigo is also a defensive master. I’ve worked with him for his last two fights and we understand each other very well.”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=5982191

Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz born September 30, 1980 in Santiago de Cuba) is a Cuban boxer who won the gold medal at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics in the Bantamweight (54 kg) class. Rigondeaux is a seven-time (2000–06) Cuban national champion at bantamweight. He currently claims an amateur record of nearly 400 fights with twelve losses; with his last losses coming to Rencise Perez and Bekzat Sattarkhanov in 1998, Waldemar Font in 1999, and his most recent loss against Aghasi Mammadov in 2003. After his defection in 2009, he turned professional. Guillermo Rigondeaux is widely considered to be one of the greatest amateur fighters of all time.[1]

  18. Desires and dreams is the title of this, yet another wasteful ideological tractate with no purpose, no clear aim, no intent.

It follows the “freedom” posting that borders with utopistic blobber left is usually accused of.

Let us see a little what is that which the team “yoani” roots for in their “some kind of pragmatic capitalism” crap they are talking about.

Today I offer you one of many interesting forums little known unless you are actually an expat. A forum of expatriated people (usanian citizens running away rfom that “pragmatic capitalism”). This one is maintained by usanians living in Chile, but there are quite a few around.

Here’s what one such usanian wrote:

“A week ago I went to Canada from the US to buy a car from a friend.
On the way back I was the only one crossing during a snowstorm at the border in Champlain, NY.
I had overdone my paperwork in fear of customs issues so I had everything remotely possible.
Unfortunately that didnt help. Customs was confused as to why I had so much info that truckers normally have and decided that, in and of itself, was an odd thing plus the fact that I had limited luggage and little cash on hand but I had only flown up 2 days prior to pick up the car and come back.
So they brought 3 of their CBP trucks over, surrounded me and escorted me over to their inspection area.
There they approached the car, albeit with no info or reason given thus far, ordered me out, took my keys and everything in my car including my bag, wallet, gps, clothes, etc.
They then escorted me into detention area in a room with 1 chair, double sided glass and nothing else and left me there for 1.5 hours with no reasons given and nothing said nor answers to my questions, what I felt was a lack of due process or evidence for any wrong-doing.
After the 1.5 hrs they came in, gave me my papers back and said, you can go, oh by the way, the dogs messed up your car inside so you may want to clean it up and they walked away.

I was apalled and yet again, still with no answers, questions or rights in the situation.
When I arrived at my car the interior was filled with mud and snow and paw prints from the dogs and they had put holes in my leather seats from their nails.

Now, I am happy to submit to make sure everyone is safe but when there is no reason, no suspicion and no answers to my questions which seemed without cause, there is something wrong.
Is this what its coming too? If it was like this for everyone then why is it that anyone makes it close to this country with a bomb of any sort?”

It is clear from the above, the usa is governed by a police apparatus and fear. Force and disrespect for those “freedoms” the team “yoani” is trying to brainwash Cubans in Cuba.

For those misguided and ill-intended among us, here’s some more how that “pragmatic capitalism” REALLY treats people on a mere suspicion of wrongdoing. And you need not even realise that you might be “wrongdoing” anything.

See, the police state, better known as usa, does not necessary tell you what is “wrongdoing”. So, you might be merilly going about your own life and suddenly end up in Cuba, of all places…

After all, since the February 2010, it is official. The usa IS a POLICE state:

And that is exactly what the team “yoani” wants for their own country.

One must wonder, if that is what they want what is wrong with the current set up…?

My guess is, white yankees’ shit must look like it is sweeter to cuban emigrants, the lowest level of what humans can be.

When yu think of it, it HAS TO BE quite embarrasing. No wonder those caught jump and let their venom drip off their rotten teeth, brown lips and stinking breath…

  19. Dumb and Dumbir no one argues with you you moron because you make don’t make a case for anything, you stand for nothing. Your sole purpose here is to insult, lie and misrepresent. Regardless of your condemnation of the castros you do their work. Your misdirection fools no-one. You have not made one cogent argument in favor of anything at anytime. What do you stand for you cretin? You never answer that question because you haven’t got anything resembling an answer. You are a retched loser and weak propagandist, insults is all you will get.

  20. AS I said, those who defend the obvious and factual LIES the team “yoani” present here, agree wit the obvious criminal and deceptive character of the team “yoani”. ANd in the worst possible form, the only thing the “defenders” can come up with, they attack with personal insults and remarks, trying to depreciate person.

The only reason personal attack come flying my way is because my arguments are facts and there’s nothing anyone can say to demant the facts.

    Here are the lies:

    1. “…my Motorola inbox …” Just a couple of messages ago the team “yoani” claimed to have a blackberry…

If “yoani” has more than one, then that too goes against her. She is complaining constantly about NOT BEING ABLE to AFFORD ONE. Suddenly she may have a whole collection of the latest gadgets?!?!?!?!?!

All presents from abroad you say? Fine by they “yoani” should NOT complain about NOT BEING ABLE to GET ONE. What they should be complaining ONLY is that Cubans cannot get one.

But we all know that TAHT IS A LIE TO. I just retuned from Cuba and we have seen thousands of young and old having a mobile talking and sending messages as if the service was for free.

    2. “…freedom, although I don’t know it personally…”This second one is quite telling one because it is actually several lies in one.

Firstly, Yoani lies that she doesn’t know the freedom, since she was living in Switzerland and Spain for a few years (not even “yoani” is consistent on how long where either. One day 2 and 1/2 in Spain, the next in both, the third 2 years in Spain and 1 and 1/2 in Switzerland… read her old messages, particularly the first year postings. It’s all there. All three different timings. Quite a lot of lies there for a reader with an eye for a detail.)

Then another thing about that period in Europe… wait a second “yoani”. You have spent a few years, let us say three and 1/2, according to your own quote, and yet, you STILL do NOT know the freedom!!!!!!?????????

What is it that you are telling us here? That even in your “pragmatic capitalism” there is no freedom? Or that you have never been out of Cuba?

When one lies, one has to remember what s/he said earlier. Because the lies come out loud and clear.

Irony is, if you prove me wrong, you yuourself will prove “yoani” wrong too.

Because I am simply quoting “her” own words…

  21. REUTERS CANADA: Cardinal says Cuba will free prisoners as promised-Sat Jan 1, 2011
HAVANA (Reuters) – Catholic Cardinal Jaime Ortega assured on Saturday that “in coming months” Cuban leaders would release 11 political prisoners as promised under a landmark deal with the government.
Speaking at a New Year’s Day mass, Ortega expressed confidence the communist-led government would fulfill its commitment to release the men, who were among 52 dissidents included in the accord he brokered and announced on July 7.

The announcement said the process would take three to four months, but so far, almost six months later, only 41 of the prisoners have been freed.

The 52 were part of a group of dissidents jailed in a 2003 government crackdown that strained Cuba’s international relations.

“A clear and formal promise from the Cuban government exists that all those prisoners will be freed,” he said of the 11.

He and Cuban leaders have previously said the government planned to release not just the 52, but all political prisoners. Ortega repeated that in his mass.

“I have the moral certainty that in the coming months not only those (11) prisoners will be freed, but others of a larger group of prisoners sanctioned for some type of act related to political actions,” he said.

Cuban leaders consider dissidents to be mercenaries in the pay of Havana’s longtime ideological enemy, the United States, and they want the freed prisoners to leave Cuba and go to Spain, which has agreed to take them.

Of the 41 released so far, 40 have accepted the deal, while one has been allowed to stay in Cuba

Some of the 11 remaining prisoners want to go to the United States and others want to stay on the Caribbean island, Ortega said.

There is disagreement over how many other political prisoners Cuba has, but in recent months the government has freed 16 not included in the group of 52.

All have agreed to go to Spain.

Cuba’s decision to release political prisoners followed an international uproar over the February death of a jailed dissident after an 85-day hunger strike for improved prison conditions.

how can I express my pride for these young people who risk their lives every day just to allow others to hear the truth about Cuba? and to be free themselves
I am one of the children of Operation Peter Pan and I did not know for a long time what Cuba was like, because the propaganda is to powerful and the wish of people in the world to dream of an Utopia. The only country where you need a visa on your own cuban passport and you get it only if they want.
I visited Cuba about 5 years ago and was shocked by the perversity of the system they have in place to supress any form of life

  24. Simba Sez: #4 Damir, I wonder if you had considered the possibility that Yoani may have more than one electronic instrument. Heaven’s she may have a Nokia, and an Ipad, with the possibility of maybe a Kindle too? Is that too difficult a concept for you?
By the way, because this is the beginning of a new year, and the time when much of the earth’s population takes a time out for reflection upon their lives, will you be deciding what you’re going to do with your “thirty pieces of silver”?
I hope you have a wonderful new year.

  26. Happy New Year Yoani.

Here’s hoping that 2011 will bring a greater measure of freedom to the Cuban people.

HI DAMIR–#4. You must be one of the Cuban jailers. Most Cubans live in government caused poverty. Yoanni Sanchez is a patriotic and brave Cuban who wants to see liberty in Cuba. And she wants a better life for the Cuban people. And she is working to make it happen. You want to keep the serfs in their chains. Free Cuba!

  28. The usual problem with the usual ranting about sonme elusive and vague concepts. The team “yoani” makes two telling mistakes. When you read them you realise they ae nothing more than a bunch of liars. And they even suck at lying.

    Here are the lies:

    1. “…my Motorola inbox …” Just a couple of messages ago the team “yoani” claimed to have a blackberry…

    2. “…reedom, although I don’t know it personally…”This second one is quite telling one because it is actually several lies in one.

Get a grip people and start at least lying consistently.

When you contradict yoursleves this many times, only those two or three blind fanatic followers here can come out and defend your blatant lies and deception.

And they can only do it by insulting and spitting all over their computers, for a lie cannot be defended with arguments.

    Not successfully, that is.

But then, we have discovered long ago what sort of people you are and what are your real objectives.

For those who still doubt any of this, just look at that “employment” page on your left in spanish language section. It is called “Classificados Cuba”. Every single one is an ad for some kind of illegal activity.

    THAT is our team “yoani”.

    A bunch of criminals.

  29. Yoani:

You have much to be proud of for all you’ve accomplished in this past year. Continueing to win a string of awards, and informing Cuban bloggers about the wonders of the internet.

You are a living national Cuban treasure, and the efforts you undertake will be repaid manyfold as you continue your work of informing us about the truth in Cuba.

Thank you, you make many of us proud and don’t forget time and circumstances are on our side, and changes will be forthcoming sooner than we think.

  30. “He who says freedom of the press means freedom, says freedom, says freedom of assembly; freedom of assembly and the right to choose freely, not only the President, but also for the workers to choose their leaders. Rights which cannot be taken away”. Speech in Camaguey on 2/5/59.

All these rights have been taken away from the people by Castro’s tyranny. On 1/15/60 he had begun the purge of labor leaders who had been democratically elected in the 10th Congress of the CTC on 11/59, thus destroying the rights attained by workers and the labor movement as a whole.
