Gaming, Escaping

They meet up every Saturday night for a party, without alcohol, without girls, without music. They spend all night in front of the keyboard looking at the screen, with their computers connected to the web to play. It’s the latest thing among Cuban teenagers, especially among boys of the emerging middle class who don’t even recognize themselves as such. “Slumber parties” with popcorn and tents set up in middle of the living room have given way to these get togethers where technology mixes with laughter, the playful with the escapist. The young people themselves call these tech marathons “turbos,” and many rent places to spend the night with their hands on the mouse. Among the most activities most in demand are games of strategy, parallel cosmologies that help them escape from the national reality.

Those who don’t own their own PC or a laptop to bring to the “feast” can go to the computer labs in some schools where, on the weekends, the teachers organize — without permission — massive “gamefests.” Starcraft, DotA, Counter Strike, Call of Duty, are sweeping the adolescent preferences and a parallel market in pirated copies guarantees the latest updates and all the necessary complements. The greatest challenge is keeping up-to-date in a country that continues to be among the least connected to the Internet in the world. So, on the list of desires and requests made to the uncle who travels, or the friend who returns from abroad, are the DVDs of these games. The on-line marketplaces — such “Revolico” — offer an extremely wide range of options to distract oneself at the margin of daily complications.

Some conversations on the street reveal the scope of this entertainment. “You have to skip that level, because the other is better,” “Don’t kill him the first time, if you don’t want them to force quit you as well,” “Build the city on this terrain, which isn’t so infested with demons.” From recreations of the Middle Ages to the most daring futuristic fantasies, they are part of the imagination of today’s young, an important piece of their lives. With them, they have filled that place that for us was once filled with speeches and slogans. They don’t applaud, they click; they don’t believe, they just play. And you don’t know whether to laugh or cry, whether to welcome them to evasion as a weapon against fundamentalism, or to lament because their escapism deprives us of that adolescent rebellion that is so badly needed.

  1. See? Every time the facts leave them without a single word to say, the only thimg left to those retards is to insult. Go mpersonal.

Primitive humanoids thimk that just because it works with their cousins apes, thumping the chest and screaming on top of their lungs will intimidate people who do not fall for this delusional ideological brainwash and make them run away…

    How stupid are these primates…

    Very much.

  2. Post 117: Yes, he is, and he somehow thinks that someone cares about his anti-capitalism, anti-USA rants on this blog. Poor misguided idiot. Look below, he thinks his drivel is so good, he posted the same one twice.

What a cowardice expressed in this last part of the above post!!!

Go children, start the revolution because “we” your parents have no courage whatsoever. Hence the adolescents fighting “our” war are BADLY NEEDED!!!!!

Disgusting cowardice and hypocrisy. From a “freedom and democracy” “fighters”…

At least, the statements by the team “yoani” leave no doubts about the integrity and real “political” aims of the “dissidents” that they claim to be.

Servants of their white “gods” up north in the nazist gulag usa.

  5. Intellectual giants (copy and paste, short pointless comments – haiku is poetry, not political pamphlets geniuses, and you suck at it anyway – and alike unemployed sewage cleaners complain when someone criticise their country and political system.

    How hypocritical of them.

Yet, I draw my inspiration from their own books of “freedom” and “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.

Not that they would understand that. Their handlers and white “gods” do though…

If such a “democratic” politics are fine for “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”, then whoever criticises them, when a socialist government implements them, is a sore loser who understands nothing and parrots what his or HER handlers told them to parrot.

Like the team “yoani” whose posts are all about how the government is gulity of everything.

Much of what Cuban government does is much the same, albeit on a smaller and less violent scale, as what the usanian government does.

If the team “yoani” criticise their own government, yet receive the money from white “gods”, what is that telling yo about these policies?

Actually, it tells you tons about the team “yoani”:

    1. ignorants
    2. self-appointed servants to foreigners, white “gods” as they lovingly call them – as every slave should
    3. zero intellect
    4. tools (in every possible sense) in hands of foreigners with intent to destroy their own country
    5. fifth column
    6. traitors (much the same as No. 5, but I like it, so here it goes)

Let me turn the tables a little: you want to destroy Cuba?

    Are you INSANE?

  9. From the post 110:

“An early, little-known account uncovering some effects of the Castros’ regimentation came from research in Cuba in 1969-’70 by U.S. cultural-anthropologists Oscar Lewis and Douglas Butterworth. They intended to test Lewis’ theory that a culture of poverty would not exist in a Marxist-oriented society. They had naively presupposed that the socially alienating conditions that engender such phenomena could develop among the poor solely under capitalism.”

Such a typical “study” bullshift from capitalists pretending to “study” “scientifically” the “Marxist-oriented” societies!!!

And these characters dared to accuse me for nit-picking, looking for details…

Contrary to popularly preferred dogma about socialist countries being poor, the facts are AGAIN contrary to the brainwash propaganda. Poland and Eastern Germany had the highest level of development and way back in 1960 have already been categorised as developed countries, along with the then USSR. The fastest growing economy in the world was Jugoslavija between 1954 and 1980. Probably the only true socialist country, but nevertheless. Just before the fall of the Berlin wall, “western” journalist, interviewing Eastern Germans in a search for “horror” and “heart-breaking” stories of people escaping the “poverty” in the Eastern “socialist” Germany were unpleasantly surprised to hear that economic status was not the reason for escapeees to leave the country.

Back then, you see, the main anti-socialist argument of the west was economy, not politics. The spin-doctors did not really know what to complain against the emerging socialism, so they were emphasizing the “perils” of colectivisation and impoverishment in “socialism”.

Yet, the refugees were people WITH money, and way too many of them were not members of the party either, yet they were well off people. It was then that the spin had changed the direction, in early 1970′ from some imaginary poverty, to focus on “political freedoms”, or lack thereof.

To now go around, select a few stupid and fake arguments from obscure and anonimous sources as if these represent some kind of pragmatic capitalist truth, is just a low and cheap hypocrisy from a bunch of ignorants, a circle that extends way beyond the limited 1 and a half pioneers support brigade capable of copy and paste as their highest intellectual achievement.

THAT is the “debate” they are capable of. One-sided blatant lies and misrepresentations of the truths they have no knowledge, not even a concept, of yet, they copy and paste in this blind faith in what their white “gods” tell them to copy and paste.

Stupidity is incurable. Dogmatic belief in delusional dogmas and failed ideologies too.

The anti-Cuban usanians pretending to have some connection with Cuba and claiming the right to call for destruction of the country to satisfy their own mentally deranged ideas have it all.

Yet, I recall the ire and the anger when I said some years ago, let us bomb the hell out of the usa. Drop a few hundred tons of dirty uranium, just as they did it to a number of countries, burn the rest with some napalm, and erase them from the face of the earth.

Now, THAT was not on. See, who is this guy calling for destruction of THEIR country?

    A HATER of the usa!!!!

Say so the HATERS of CUBA.

Well, that sounds like a compliment, and a badge of honoUr (note the “U”, illiterate misspelling ignorants!).

  10. John #110

Thank you for your post! It was great. I watched the video and was struck by two things: Mariela Castro’s sheer arrogance (her sense of entitlement and flippant nature); and the fact that everyone else thinks things are going to change in Cuba. Mariela does not seem to get it. If I were her, I would get out of Dodge while the getting is good.

I hope 2012 continues in the tradition of 2011 and we see the demise of more dictatorships. Happy New Year Everyone!

  11. I’d suggest that losers need to insult, but I do not need to. Just a quick glance over the post below screams for itself. First the poster “democratically” decides to very loosely quotes the words of Mariela Castro, then he goes on to give an insulting advice to Damir.

As I always say, when nailed to the wall with facts and truth, the losers react with the only thing left to them: personal insults.

Mariela Castro did NOT say what the liar below imputates.

THIS is what she said, among many other perfectly valid and normal things that actually run along the supposed line of thought the fake “democrats” here only pretend to advocate:

“MARIELA CASTRO: “No. He doesn’t talk to me about his work. I think he is like everyone else, “expectant” but he always says, “Many ideas will arise – the people will contribute – and many things will be done that we never imagined. I think he is happy with what is happening. I think he’ll say goodbye in peace, knowing he’s left the country in good condition to move forward”.”

Far cry from “left the country in a good shape…”

Who needs to get a life?

The losers and other self-fashioned pioneers of “freedom and democracy”, which they build on lies and loosely interpreted facts twisted to support their own delusions and wet panties.

I saw this doco here too, and frankly, you need to be a mentally deranged person to fall off the couch for anything that has been said because there were no spectacular claims made nor there was any underlying political tone added to the story. When even a group of republican (conserves) politicians in the usanian politics come out tgether to call for usanian nazist sanctions and embargo to be removed from Cuba, it is clear WHY is Cuba in such a bad shape in the first place.

Like Japan, Cuba depends on almost everything being imported.

Castros’ economic talent is non-existent and is the second part of the story, but sadly for the wrong wing losers, it is not the crucial part.

The sanctions and embargo is the crucial part.

Cuba was doing fine when it had the access to the Eastern block markets. It was able to buy the raw and manufactured commodities and products.

Rallying around your failed pin-up granmother and your failed “democracy” and “some kind of pragmatic capitalism” is not going to change the FACTS!

You are all hypocrites and liars. You prove it every day with every word you write. Just like the last post below.

You bark at others and criticise the very same things you yourselves do.

What is that? Some kind of lunacy?

    Definitely.

    And unbelievable HYPOCRISY.

I could suggest you get a life too. But in your cases, it is evidently a long gone opportunity.

Enjoy the free fall while you can for the landing is going to hurt bad.

  12. ABC TV Australia did a half-hour story on Cuba a few months ago, highlighting the pathetic state of the country. There was an interview with Mariela Castro who said something along the lines of “my father realises changes have to be made in Cuba but at least he can fade out of the picture knowing he’s left the country in good shape”!!!! We nearly fell off the couch!!!. I think you can see the program http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2011/s3183082.htm

Damir – you need to get a life, really. Failing that, go stick your head up a dead bear’s bum.

  13. WILL LOOK UP THIS RESEARCH PAPER AND WILL BRING IT FOR DISCUSSION!

NEW JERSEY.COM : Cuba’s culture of poverty persists: Op-ed- By ROLAND A. ALUM

The Fidel-&-Raul Castro regime marks 53 years this Jan. 1. The brothers unquestionably enjoyed extraordinary popularity in 1959, but the enthusiasm soon vanished as they turned Cuba into a financially and spiritually bankrupt Marxist anti-utopia. As a result, nearly two million Cubans of all social backgrounds have fled, many of them settling in Hudson County.

By the 1950s, Cuba was a regional leader in numerous social indicators, notwithstanding instability and corruption during the republican era (1902-1958). But since 1959 the island-nation has become a backward, closed society beleaguered by unproductivity and rationing.

Sociologist Tomas Masaryk noted that “dictators ‘look good’ until the last minutes”; in Cuba’s case, it seems particularly fine to certain U.S. intellectuals. Comfortably from abroad, apologists contend that most of the socioeconomic problems that traditionally afflicted the prior five and a half decades were eliminated after 1959. Yet, fact-finding by international social-scientists challenges this fantasy.

An early, little-known account uncovering some effects of the Castros’ regimentation came from research in Cuba in 1969-’70 by U.S. cultural-anthropologists Oscar Lewis and Douglas Butterworth. They intended to test Lewis’ theory that a culture of poverty would not exist in a Marxist-oriented society. They had naively presupposed that the socially alienating conditions that engender such phenomena could develop among the poor solely under capitalism.

The Lewis-Butterworth early on-the-ground scrutiny validates many accounts by respected experts and the much vilified exiles. There exists a culture of poverty in Cuba, although it is not necessarily a survivor of the old times, but seemingly a by-product of the Castros’ totalitarian socialism. There were always poor Cubans, and some version of the culture of poverty might have existed before; but in my communications with Butterworth, he reconfirmed another discovery. The researchers could not document a case for a pervasive pre-1959 culture of poverty. The authorities must have suspected the prospective conclusions because the scholars were abruptly expelled and their Cuban statistician imprisoned.

Upon the 53rd anniversary, the old Lewis-Butterworth analysis invites renewed reflection. Apologists customarily replicate propagandistic cliches by blaming failures on external factors, such as the ending, two decades ago, of the multibillion-dollar subsidies from the defunct Soviet Bloc.

The anthropologists’ undertaking, however, revealed that life for average Cubans in the Castros’ first decade was already beset with corruption and time-wasting food lines. Likewise, Butterworth described how ordinary people were engaging in what socio-behavioral scientists now call “everyday forms of resistance.” Cubans were already undermining the police-state through black-marketeering, pilfering and vandalism, as we hear that they continue to do decades later.

After more than half a century of oppression and poor quality of life, one hopes for a transition to an open society with equal opportunities for every Cuban.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The author, a long-time Hudsonite, is a political-anthropologist affiliated with Icod Associates of New Jersey.

  14. Dictatorships inevitably end. At the beginning of 2011, who would have predicted the death of Gadhafi and the fall from power of Hosni Mubarak and Ben Ali?

On a completely unrelated note, I find it interesting that Fidel Castro has not written a new “reflection” since mid-November. Don’t want to read too much into it as he has taken breaks before. Just saying.

  15. gloria still struggling with “pamela” fiasco and own mental shortfalls disabling her to find something intelligent, or Marx forbid relevant, to contribute with.

So, gloria..er, pamela, does what an usanian does.

Employ their IQ-deprived brains to post insults instead.

Further than that is just a no-go. It has to be said, that innate inability runs along the political affiliation. nixon – cretin, Carter – smarter; reagan – cretin, clinton – smarter, forest gump – definitely the lord of cretins, obama – smarter.

None of them really a decent human being, but you can see the pattern: conserves… conservatives that is, stupid as a stone, less conserved “democrats” a little smarter.

And the pattern is reflected among the pioneers of the team “yoani’s” support brigade.

Some “small” sampling of Australians branding usanians fat, arrogant, rude, obnoxious, “know-it-all” ignorants.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mWtWz_aGyk&feature=endscreen&NR=1

Perfect description of whatsher name? pamela?

    gloria?

I’ll go with Australians on this one.

  16. LOL, that looked like a great sampling of Australian “scholars.” Here is what was posted just under the video: his is a small sampling of Australians and their criticisms and stereotypes of Americans. Take it for what it is.
There it is: “Criticisms and stereotypes of a small sampling of Australians,” and the Croatian scholar extrapolates this to mean Australians in general.
    Dumb dumb.

  17. Damir, why don’t you just start your own “I hate the United States” you-tube channel? You spend enough time there already, trolling for your dumb videos.

So what if there are stupid people from the United States? There are stupid people from Croatia too, you are living proof of that.

The world is laughing already? Now you speak for the world? LOL.

Why do so many people emigrate to the United States? Freedom and opportunity.

You’re not raining on anyone’s parade here, you’re exposing yourself for the hater that you are.

Do not “reincarnate”? What the heck?

  18. What usanians think about usanians?

Nothing. There is no usa. On a question name one country that starts with the “U”, not one remembered to say “United states…”

    Someone said “Yugoslavia” instead.

Germany is one fo the countries in the axis of evil… Jerusalem California and Florida are the others…!!!

Have some laugh on your own stupidity.

The world is laughing already, and for a long time.

    Just do NOT reincarnate, please…

  19. Damir said: “The bad news for the conserves…sorry, conservatives here is that no matter how “many” they are, I am winning this debate and reducing the team “yoani” to what they deserve: irrelevant traitors of their own country.”

“The traffic is going down rapidly, the panicking handlers and little slaves are inventing nicks and massively “subscribing” “new” followers” to create the appearance of the opposite, but the “cuban wonder” has lost its’ lustre.”

Grasping Damir! THE ONES WHO ARE THE TRAITORS ARE THE CASTROFASCIST RAUL & FIDEL! THEY LIED TO THE CUBAN PEOPLE, SEQUESTERED THE REVOLUTION AND ESTABLISHED A KINGDOM FOR THEIR FAMILY AND THEIR THUGS! IS THAT ENOUGH CAPS FOR YOU?

YOUTUBE : FIDEL CASTRO, MENTIROSO Y TRAIDOR – FIDEL CASTRO, LIAR AND A TRAITOR! – Here Fidel states multiple times he is NOT a Communist! WE ALL KNOW HOW MUCH HIS WORD IS WORTH!

  20. Gato Negro ! YOU ARE YOUR CUTEST WHEN YOU “GRASP”!
Damir! YOU “GRASP” TOO MUCH, SO THE CUTENESS IS WEARING OFF FAST!

  21. MickiVargas ! First try without your e-mail and thus not with your picture. Second, if you have a link take out the http:// !

  22. This is what would happen to Cuba should white “gods” servants in Cuba succeed somehow:

Money and rich Cubans would run away from a country in free fall.

Free fall is the only thing that ever happens to a country after the usa “frees” it from the “shackles” of some, usually imaginary, “anti-democratic” environment.
